We willen op tijd bij het Rila klooster zijn omdat we gisteren hebben gezien hoe druk het kan zijn. We kunnen voor deur parkeren. Aantal straathonden komen gezellig kijken en blijven bij de bus liggen waken. Het klooster ligt in een vallei met dichtbeboste bergen, muren rondom van zo\u2019n 20 meter hoog, je ziet dus van buiten niets. In het klooster kun je ook logeren. Geen entree je kunt dus het meeste wel bekijken. Inderdaad zijn we vroeg en missen we de hordes dagtoeristen uit Sofia. Schitterend complex met een geboortekerk, fresco\u2019s in de omliggend arcades en zo mooi en helder de kleuren. De fresco\u2019s laten alleen afbeeldingen zien van zondige mensen die de hel worden ingetrokken of op aarde verleid worden door duivels of ander addergebroed. Niet voor tere zieltjes. In de geboortekerk mag je geen foto\u2019s maken. Hier ook de prachtigste fresco\u2019s van verhalen uit de bijbel en tekeningen van dieren en bloemen. En 10 meter brede Iconostase (houtsnijwerk, bedekt met bladgoud) is prachtig. Afbeeldingen uit de bijbel en veel afbeeldingen van wilde dieren en bloemen. Het museum met een kistje met de linkerhand van de heilige Ivan slaan we even over. De klokkentoren en de gebouwen rondom de kerk zijn prachtig en heel goed onderhouden. Op dit moment worden er werkzaamheden op het dak verricht en ook in de geboortekerk zijn restaurateurs bezig met hun precieze werk.
